Atiyah was killed by a CIA predator drone strike in Pakistan on August 22, 2011. He had been al-Qaeda’s overall commander in Pakistan’s tribal areas and, as of late 2010, he was the leader of al-Qa’ida in North and South Waziristan, Pakistan. He was born in Libya around 1970. He got to know Osama Bin Laden while fighting the Russians in Afghanistan during the 80s. He gained stature by becoming an expert in explosives and in Islam and became Bin Laden’s appointed emissary to Iran. He represented al Qaeda in Iran recruiting and facilitating talks with other terrorist groups. Atiyah was also a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group and the Jamaat Ansar al-Sunna, a fighting group in northern and central Iraq.
