Omar Abdel-Rahman, the "Blind Sheikh" behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing died in prison in February 2017. He was born May 3, 1938 in Egypt. He was blinded as an infant by diabetes. He had a life sentence at the medical center part of the Butner Federal Correctional Institution in North Carolina. He was an inspiring spiritual advisor to Arabs who were fighting Russians in Afghanistan during the 1980s. He came to New York in 1990. He and his radicalized followers plotted attacks on landmarks like the United Nations and the harbor tunnels, and they successfully bombed the World Trade Center in 1993. His influence over Islamic militants continued from prison until his death.
